São Paulo is the most modern and cosmopolitan state among the 26 which compose Brazil. Its area of influence encompasses the most prosperous region of Latin America, including the Central and Southern states of Brazil, Uruguay and central areas of Argentina and Chile.

Its metropolitan area is the second largest of the Americas, falling right behind that of Mexico city. The city of São Paulo, with 9,8 million inhabitants, is the center of one of the largest metropolitan areas - The Metropolitan Area of São Paulo encompassing 38 cities and 16 million inhabitants.
